Tang Soo Do is about attitude.
"The greatest warrior is the one who never need unsheathe his sword."
Samurai adage
Learning martial arts is a unique activity. Most people think martial arts is about kicking and punching, but it is so much more. Martial artists learn about commitment and perseverance, as Tang Soo Do becomes a part of their lives.
It is not an activity for a season but for a lifetime.
To achieve the benefits of martial arts training, one must be consistent and enduring. The urge to give up must be challenged and conquered to attain your goals. In doing so, students learn to focus on their objectives and defend themselves from frustration, impatience and distraction.
Students have clear guidelines in order to reach their next rank. Through dedication and resolve, students gain confidence in knowing the achievement is theirs alone.
Martial arts is a very personal passage yet it shares all the benefits of group activities. Practitioners become a part of a special brotherhood. Students train with one another two or three times a week for years; creating special bonds difficult to match. We celebrate successes and help each other work through weaknesses.
Without conforming to the protocol of the martial arts there is no martial artist only a technician. Bowing to your juniors and seniors, which may include people you don't like, softens the sharp edges of arrogance. Respect and humility are the rules; in the true martial spirit - pride gives way.
Service to the studio, your juniors and seniors are also required; in doing so, self-importance is overcome. We learn as we advance we are not to be served, but to serve.
Passion and patience are learned as students practice and practice searching for the perfect technique; refining and working their skills. The physical benefits of training transcend to other sports as students learn to move from their center and develop balance, flexibility and overall coordination.
The mental benefits of training transcend to other areas of their lives as students develop a healthy sense of honor and grace and power.
It takes time, it takes commitment, it takes courage!
